Heart Care

Who Is a Candidate?
Cardiac Rehabilitation is designed for the patients who have had a recent heart attack or been diagnosed with angina. It is also for patients who have undergone open-heart surgery, coronary artery bypass graft surgery, coronary angioplasty and other coronary interventions. Sessions are conducted in a comfortable setting equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for exercise and monitoring of our patients, as well as classroom and private consultation areas.

Phase I
This phase starts while the patient is still in the hospital. Focusing on education and safe progression of activity, the program helps prepare the patient to return home.

Phase II
Phase II starts after hospitalization. It lasts 8 to 12 weeks and is tailored to each patient's individual needs. Phase II is a progressive, continuously supervised and monitored, exercise program. In addition to exercise, patients receive education that emphasizes risk factor modification, nutrition and stress management for the patient and family.

Phase III
This is an ongoing risk factor modification program designed for graduates of Phase II whose physicians have identified them as being at high risk for cardiovascular disease. Phase III focuses on building permanent lifestyle modifications through exercise and continued education.

How to Register
All participants of Cardiac Rehabilitation must be referred by a physician, so discuss your interest in the program with your doctor. All sessions, except Phase III, may be covered by most major medical insurance plans. Phase III, although not reimbursed by insurance, is offered at a reasonable price.

Cardiac Support Group
Heart disease changes not only the life of the patient, but the lives of family and loved ones as well. Through Olathe Medical Center's Cardiac Support Group, patients learn to cope with the lifestyle changes brought on by heart disease. They receive educational information through various presentations and develop friendships with people in similar circumstances. The group meets the first Thursday of each month from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Olathe Medical Center's Cardiac Rehabilitation Center, located in Suite 450 of The Doctors Building 1. Persons with heart disease, their families and friends are encouraged to attend the Cardiac Support Meetings. There is no fee to attend. For more information, call 913- 791-4222.
