Who Is a Candidate?
Pulmonary Rehabilitation is designed for patients with chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis, emphysema,
asthma, interstitial lung disease, primary pulmonary hypertension,
lung cancer, lung transplantation or before and after lung volume
reduction surgery.
Phase I
This phase starts while the
patient is still in the hospital. The focus of this phase is building
strength and basic education on lung
disease and home respiratory care. The program helps prepare the
patient to return home.
Phase II
Phase II starts after hospitalization. It
meets two times a week and is tailored to each individual's needs.
Patients receive education
that allows them to gain the understanding, skills and confidence
needed to manage the disease on a long-term basis. They also receive
continually
supervised and monitored exercise training.
Phase III
This is an ongoing program designed for graduates
of Phase II and promotes independence and encourages further
development of self-management
skills.
How to Register
All participants
of Pulmonary Rehabilitation must be referred by a physician, so discuss
your interest in the program with your doctor.
All sessions, except Phase III, may be covered by most major medical
insurance plans. Phase III, although not reimbursed by insurance,
is offered at a reasonable price.
