Teamwork
Leads to Individualized Care
The Kansas Joint Specialty Center was designed with a teamwork approach
to patient care in mind. The key to the success of any surgical procedure
is the collaboration of several key allied health professionals. In joint
replacement surgery, the team begins with board-certified orthopaedic surgeons,
specially trained orthopaedic nurses and anesthesiologists who work together
with physical and occupational therapists, social workers and other medical
personnel to offer each patient individualized care.

Patients
Receive Specialized Attention From Start to Finish
The
Kansas Joint Specialty Center excels by offering patients a full continuum
of care. Before surgery, an experienced orthopaedic nurse clinician
will present an educational class that allows patients and their families
to meet each
member of the team who will be responsible for an aspect of their care.
The class helps them become actively involved in their surgical procedure
and
ultimately, in the successful outcome of their joint replacement surgery.
Patient confidence, family trust and quality outcomes are cornerstones
of the center’s unique combination of pre-surgery education and post-surgery
follow-up. Patients may continue their rehabilitation at home with
the professional assistance of the Home Health Services of Olathe Medical
Center.
What
Is Joint Replacement Surgery?
The
Kansas Joint Specialty Center focuses on knee and hip replacements,
which can help eliminate pain and improve mobility for people suffering
from
advanced osteoarthritis. The rough surfaces of the joint are re-lined
with smooth-surfaced
metal and plastic components that replace cartilage that has worn
away. When arthritis knee or hip pain severely limits the ability
to walk,
work or perform
even simple activities, knee or hip replacement should be considered.
How
Long Is the Hospital Stay?
The
average hospital stay for either knee or hip replacements is three
days barring any complications.
How
Long Is Recuperation?
Recovery
and healing varies with each person. Patients typically use a
walker or crutches for four to six weeks after the surgery. Most
people
gradually increase their
activities. Your physician and therapist will guide you in your
recovery process.
What
About Pain?
Our
in-house experts begin pain management immediately after surgery
to attain each patient's maximum level of comfort.
What
Are the Results?
Most
orthopaedic experts consider replacement to be the best method
of handling advanced arthritis in the knee or hip. Joint
replacements have literally
put hundreds of thousands of patients back on their feet.
