Pulmonary Function Laboratory
State-of-the-art
equipment is used to aid in the diagnosis of lung disorders such as asthma,
emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis and chronic bronchitis. Pulmonary
function testing involves the measurement of airflow and volume as the
patient breathes into sophisticated equipment.
Typical pulmonary testing is completed in approximately an hour and
is often utilized as part of the pre-operative evaluation process. Pulmonary
function testing may be performed while resting as well as during exercise
to gain additional information about an individual's cardiopulmonary
response to increased activity.
Blood
Gas Laboratory
Blood
gas analysis, also called arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis, is a test
that measures the amounts of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood,
as
well as the acidity (pH) of the blood. To perform an ABG a Respiratory
Therapist draws a small sample of blood, which is analyzed to
provide
important physiologic information to the physician. The College
of American
Pathologists (CAP), a symbol of excellence for the services being provided,
accredits the Olathe Medical Center (OMC) Blood Gas Laboratory.
Highly Trained Staff
Respiratory Therapists evaluate, treat and care
for patients of all ages with breathing or other cardiopulmonary disorders.
All OMC Respiratory Therapists are licensed by the
State
of Kansas and practice under the medical direction of board-certified
pulmonologists.
In addition, many OMC therapists have training and credentials in specialties
such as care of the newborn infant, pulmonary diagnostics, care of the
adult critical care patient and asthma management. Respiratory
Therapists are part of the multi-disciplinary team at OMC who are instrumental
in delivering high-quality, individualized patient care.
