Your Experience At The Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC)
Directions and Where to Park
The ASC is located in The Doctors Building 2, Suite 101at 20805 W 151st
St, Olathe, KS.. The Doctors Building 2 is the building furthest west
on the Olathe Medical Center
campus. Look for the Ambulatory
Surgery Center signage on the front of the building. You will need
to park in the front
of The Doctors Building 2 by the west entrance. Reserved parking spaces
are available for ASC patients.
Pre-Screening
An RN will contact you by phone 3 to 7 days prior to your scheduled surgery.
We begin the process of planning for your visit at this time by collecting
pertinent information about you. You will be asked questions regarding
your health history, current medications you are taking, previous surgeries
and
hospitalizations, allergies, etc. An
anesthesiologist and a nurse will begin the best plan of care for you.
You will be given a time to arrive at the ASC. Your scheduled surgery time
may change prior to the day of your surgery for various reasons. If your
surgery time changes, you will be notified. Please keep your surgery day somewhat
flexible
so time changes don’t cause significant problems.

Especially for Children
The ASC offers a Pediatric Pre-op Party each
week. Our pediatric patients and their parents are invited to tour the ASC and
have questions answered. Patients are given a backpack, watch a video that explains
what their visit will be like and meet Medibear, our mascot. |
Check-In
Process
Once you enter the ASC, a registration clerk will meet with you to verify your
personal information: phone number, address, insurance information, etc. During
your visit to the ASC you may be asked some of the same questions several times.
Please don’t be offended by this, as this is our way to assure quality
care. The registration clerk will escort you to a pre-op room where a nurse
will
prepare you for surgery. |

Pre-Op
Individual, private rooms make preparation for your surgery ideal. You
will be assigned a nurse to help you get ready for surgery. Here you
will be asked to change into a gown, remove all jewelry, contact lenses,
dentures,
piercing, etc. We suggest you travel light.
Visitors are allowed at this point. However we ask that only one visitor
at a time be in the pre-op room. We do make exceptions for our child
patients so both mom and dad can stay with them. Our cozy family room is
available for the rest of the family.
An IV will be started and any pre-op meds that have been ordered for you
will be given. The surgeon and surgery nurse will come in and talk with you
and answer any questions you might have. Your anesthesiologist will meet with
you to discuss the anesthetic options available for you.
Surgery
When it is time for you to go to the surgery suite, the circulating RN
will verify your name and what we will be doing for you. He or she will
take you to the operating room. You will be asked to move onto
the operating room bed where a heart monitor and blood pressure cuff
will be attached.
Post-Op
Recovery
After surgery, you will be transported to our Phase I recovery area for
approximately 30 minutes. The length of time you stay in Phase I recovery
depends on your physical status according to specific discharge
criteria for this area. As recovery depends on the individual, time
varies
with each
patient. You wear monitoring
devices to monitor your heart, blood pressure and breathing.
Once you have met the criteria to move on, you will be taken to our Phase
II recovery area. Here, you will find private, individual rooms with TVs,
recliners and gliders. This is where we extend your recovery to make sure
you are ready to go home. Your family will meet you in this area. We will
be happy to phone your prescription to your pharmacy or you might want
to use
our drive-up Pharmacy Express here
at Olathe Medical Center. Once you have met the criteria for this area,
you are ready to be discharged and complete your recovery at home. We ask
that
a designated driver be a part of your discharge process because you may
receive medications
that will not permit you to drive.
An RN will escort you to a discharge area where your family
will drive up to take you home. An RN will contact you within a few days
of your surgery to see how you are doing.
